Dear players, coaches and referees of the Bandy European Tournament of U17
The city of Varkaus and the local Bandy Club, WP 35, has once again done a good job for organizing challenging Bandy event in their home field, Kämäri.
Varkaus is an important place in Finnish Bandy. Many great Finnish bandy players has learned his skills in Varkaus and especially in Kämäri Sports centre where has been bandy field over half of century.
Just few to mention: Esko and Ari Holopainen, father and son Holopainen who both have done remarkable career in Bandy. Esko’s heydays were in the time of black and white photographs, Ari is active bandy coach in Lidköping – after many years on the field in Sweden. Sami Laakkonen is Finland’s top player in Russian League and still one of the best strikers in the World.
In the board of the Finnish Bandy Federation there are also strong Varkaus-based actors: Mrs Kaisa Hartikainen-Herranen is the key person of the bandy of girls and women in Finland. Also Mr Timo Wallius, despite his Helsinki-orientation, has long lasting roots in Varkaus, and keeps good relations to his old mother club.
Dear participants: When you are skating on the field of Kämäri, you may feel the sense of place of Finnish bandy scene. Let’s hope that the City of Varkaus and its surroundings will show its best parts to all members of the U17 European Tournament.
